I really wanted to name this smoothie something cool because every time I make it, I always admire the coloring on it and just think it’s so beautifully blue!
Don’t worry, though, I promise there’s no alcohol in this Blue Lagoon smoothie and no added sugars either.
When I was feeling my worst, I did a TON of research on what the heck I was supposed to eat with an IBS/gastritis flare. I found one food come up over and over again that really surprised me and to this day I make sure to have a serving of these every single day.
That superfood I saw come up over and over again was actually blueberries!
Blueberry anthocyanins have the ability to efficiently reach the GI tract and exhibit a broad range of biochemical effects. They have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capabilities that have proven effective against Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
They’re also a fruit that’s lower in sugar (Candida diet approved!) and rich in nutrients. I seriously have these every single day and have grown to truly love them.
Cucumbers are high in nutrients and extremely hydrating. They’re also soothing to the gut + help thicken your smoothie.
Peas or Bananas
I wanted to make a recipe without banana for my friends that can’t tolerate them or are trying to stay away higher sugar fruits.
Peas are one of the best plant based sources of protein and easy to grab at the store fresh or frozen. They can also aid in digestion and are relatively easy to digest for most people.
*However, they are technically legumes and a higher starch food, so have them moderately if you’re dealing with SIBO and/or if they don’t work for you right now, that’s probably why. You can sub this for banana if you tolerate bananas okay.
Nuzest’s Digestive Support Protein
Most protein powders are filled with gut irritating ingredients that can make it hard to heal your gut. Nuzest’s Digestive Support Protein is the first protein powder I’ve seen that is actually formulated to HEAL the gut. It is by far cleaner than the majority of elemental diets and medical food grade products I’ve seen. It comes with 5 ingredients including pea protein, L-Glutamine, vanilla, bacillus coagluans, and a small amount of coconut sugar.
Each of these ingredients are easily digestible and extremely healing for the gut (minus the coconut sugar but it’s a more natural, unprocessed form of sugar – which is why it’s allowed even under a paleo diet).

I prefer the chocolate flavor for this recipe or you can sub with plain cacao powder. Cacao is the purest form of chocolate you can get. It’s not going to be as sweet as eating a chocolate bar, but it’s a nice way to get your chocolate fix without suffering from reflux for it. If your symptoms are more severe, you can start with the Vanilla and always try a chocolate sample later.
Optional: King or Black Coffee
I haven’t touched a cup of coffee in 5 years – that is, until I tried Organo’s King Coffee.
King Coffee contains rare organic Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi) spores powder, used for thousands of years for its immune benefits. The Reishi in the coffee actually works to modulate the caffeine and impact of pH in the body. That means people that normal get jittery drinking coffee (or really any caffeinated beverage) can tolerate King Coffee pretty well.
I decided to try it out for myself and I can attest that I don’t get jittery or nauseous at all drinking it and I absolutely LOVE being able to treat myself to coffee again!
If you want to add a ‘mocha’ or coffee flavor to your smoothie, this right here is IT.
If you’re ready to try King Coffee, you can purchase it here.
You can make this with any blender, but WOW OH WOW can I just say my Vitamix is the best investment I’ve ever made. If you’re on the fence… do it! Here are some things that might be helpful for you to have to make this recipe.
10 minPrep Time
10 minTotal Time
- 3/4 cup of Blueberries
- 1/2 cup of Cucumber Slices (washed and peeled)
- 1/4 - 1/2 cup of Green Peas (I use Organic Sweet Peas)
- 1 Scoop of Clean Lean Protein (I prefer Chocolate, but Vanilla if gastritis symptoms are more severe)
- 1 Tbsp Almond Butter (or nut/seed butter of choice)
- 1/2 cup of Almond Milk (or dairy free milk of choice)
- Place cucumber, blueberries, and milk into blender and blend thoroughly.
- Add in protein powder and almond butter. Blend again.
- Lastly, add in the peas and blend on HIGH to make sure you blend them thoroughly (the first time I made this the peas didn't blend and I chewed on them). Add milk as needed if you have difficulty blending.
- Note: You can add some greek yogurt or probiotic capsules optionally. This is my favorite probiotic supplement that actually works.
