If you know anything about me, you know that I have STRUGGLED with my digestion. Between IBS, SIBO, Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease, leaky gut, and gastritis… I have been around the block a few times.
I know the pain and discomfort, personally, that comes with all of these conditions and I know how desperate you feel to just be able to eat ANYTHING without pain, constipation, inflammation, nausea, etc.
This is what led me to first start using essential oils. I didn’t have any diagnoses or idea what was wrong with me at the time and I was desperate to try anything that would make me feel better or give me any amount of relief – no matter how small.
In 2017, I began to make big changes to my diet and lifestyle.
I removed major allergens that could be possibly causing an inflammatory immune reaction within my body due to the development of leaky gut. The Autoimmune Protocol is a great tool / resource to do this as you are trying to find out what your food triggers are and to decrease inflammation for a time while you heal your gut.
I also began working with a Functional Diagnostic Nutritionist Practitioner to get to the root cause of my digestive issues. We began with a SIBO breath test as well as a stool test.
In the meantime, I purchased a Family Essentials Kit to try using essential oils for symptom relief. Here were my GO TOs during this time.
Peppermint is one of the most affordable, versatile essential oils that exist. I truly believe it is an oil that needs to be in everyone’s home. Here’s everything you need to know about Peppermint Oil.
Chemical Compounds: Menthol + Menthone
Studies: A 2007 study used peppermint oil to treat IBS. After 4 weeks, 50% of patients reported a reduction in symptoms.
1 – Soothes digestive issues. Peppermint’s menthol content helps intestinal muscles relax. This reduces bloating, gas, and nausea.
2 – Freshens breath + fights cavities. The naturally occurring anti-microbial properties in peppermint may kill bacteria that lead to cavities and gum disease. Don’t forget – digestion starts with the mouth! Good oral hygiene can lead to better digestion.
3 – Boosts energy. With poor digestion / malabsorption comes fatigue. Peppermint can help improve concentration and fight fatigue.
4 – Soothes respiratory conditions. If you have LPR, reflux gets into your throat / larynx, causing a chronic cough and it makes it very difficult to breathe. Peppermint acts as an expectorant and may relieve respiratory symptoms.
Peppermint oil does a whole lot more, but these are pretty much the main digestive issues it can aid you with as needed. Peppermint oil is $22.00 for dōTERRA wholesale customers. // Purchase Peppermint here or become a wholesale member with 25% off pricing here.
DigestZen is a blend made up of several different oils in one bottle. DigestZen is made up of: Anise Fruit, Peppermint, Ginger, Caraway, Coriander, Tarragon, and Fennel Seed.
This blend is specifically formulated to promote a healthy digestive system.
DigestZen soothes indigestion / motion sickness, and reduces gas, bloating, and occasional indigestion.
*There is also a host of DigestZen products on dōTERRA’s website here.*
DigestZen TerraZyme Complex is basically dōTERRA’s digestive enzyme formula.
We all have naturally occurring digestive enzymes that our pancreas, stomach, salivary glands, or small intestines produce. These digestive enzymes are responsible for breaking our food down to it’s simplest form, so we can properly digest our food and absorb it’s nutrients.
In a person with leaky gut, IBS, or IBD — they may not have enough digestive enzymes to digest food properly. This can create issues with absorption and, ultimately, nutrient deficiency.
Taking a supplemental digestive enzyme can help your body break down a “harder to digest” meal (such as raw or highly processed foods).
Want to know how I used Peppermint + DigestZen? Here are some of my favorite ways to use these oils. For more recipes and a personal Wellness Plan (PDF) be sure to order your dōTERRA essential oils through me here.
→ Rub 1-2 drops of Peppermint / DigestZen directly on stomach. Once you’ve started using essential oils and are used to diluting, you can attempt to try using oils “neat” without a carrier oil. Most people don’t (and I don’t recommend it especially with sensitive skin) but place these oils neat on my stomach is the only thing that helped with the bloating and constipation at the time.
→ Take 1-2 drops DigestZen in a veggie capsule to prevent motion sickness. Do you get sick on rides, road trips, or flights? Try taking 1-2 drops internally before a trip or getting to an amusement park (with some light crackers) to ease feelings of queasiness.
→ Diffuse 5 drops of Peppermint when feeling fatigued. If you need an energy boost, Peppermint is the way to go. You can diffuse or apply topically on your wrists and neck.
→ Take 1-2 drops DigestZen in a veggie capsule when introducing new foods. This can soothe the digestive tract and prevent a possible negative reaction.
Additional Digestive Support
Some other recommended tips for optimal digestion + a healthy gut that I, personally, follow:
Take a probiotic. Antibiotic use, stress, and loads of other factors can destroy our gut microbiome. We need a healthy amount of probiotics to promote a healthy body. I recommend Just Thrive probiotics as it is strong enough to make it past the stomach’s harsh environment, but gentle enough to use if you have SIBO / IBS.
